很多同学知道 genuine 有「真诚」之义，除此之外，它还可以表示 exactly what it appears to be「真正的，名副其实的」，类似 real。既可以指某物保真，比如，「真皮」的英文就是 genuine leather；也可以指某种情况是「真的」，某人的身份是「真的」等。

所以 genuinely 可以在很多时候替换 really。而 really 正是我们写作中经常用到的词汇。下面我们来读一读 2022 年 6 月四级阅读中的一句话，其中 genuinely engage with the course material 是指「真正参与到课程学习中」。

First of all, students lack the desire to learn, and they simply complete their assignments to receive credit for a passing grade rather than genuinely engage with the course material.

fundamentally 非常

fundamentally = very, extremely

Compared with teens a couple of decades ago, the way they interact with traditional media like books and movies is fundamentally different.

fundamentally

对应的形容词是 fundamental，表示 relating to the most basic and important parts of something「重大的，根本的」，比如 the fundamental cause of the problem 是指「问题的根本原因」。所以 fundamentally 用来表示「根本上」。

如果一件事从根本上是错的，说明什么？说明彻底错了。所以这个副词还可以表示「非常地，完全地」，我们可以用它来替换用了八百年的 very, completely, extremely 等程度副词。因此，句中 fundamentally different 是指「截然不同」。来看《经济学人》的一个例句。

A few schools are even fundamentally rethinking their recruitment policies to reflect the evolving character of modern management.

一些学校甚至正从根本上重新考虑招生政策，以契合现代管理不断演变的特点。

assume the obligation of ... 承担责任

assume the obligation of sth= take responsibility for sth

Whoever they appoint will assume responsibility for all financial matters.

assume

在写作中，尤其是一些有关社会问题的作文中，我们经常要提到「承担责任」「解决问题」等套话。如果你不想再用 take responsibility 来表示「承担责任」，那不妨换上 assume，搭配的名词换成 obligation，变身为 assume the obligation of sth。

assume 是个非常重要的动词，常用来表示「假设，认为」。另外它还可以表示 「承担」责任、义务等，相当于 take, undertake。除了这些外，shoulder 也可以表示「承担」责任。

The court assumed responsibility for the girl's welfare.

法庭承担了保障这个女孩福利的责任。

generate 产生，创造

generate = create

On the one hand, many see value in diversity, which can contribute a variety of perspectives, encourage new ideas, and generate innovative solutions.

译文：一方面，许多人见识到多样性的价值，比如，多样性可以贡献各种观点，鼓励新想法，并产生创新型解决方案。

generate

这是一个英文很常用，但鲜少在大家作文中出现的动词。generate 最常用来表示 to produce or create sth 「产生；引起；创造」，它可以跟收益、新创意等很多名词搭配，比如，generate revenue「创造收益」， generate new ideas「带来新创意」。前不久，《经济学人》写过一篇有关阿尔诺的文章，他是著名奢侈品品牌路易威登集团的总裁兼 CEO。

Mr Solca estimates it generates €20bn in sales (about a third of LVMH’s revenues in 2021), with operating margins close to 50%.

索尔卡估计其销售额为 200 亿欧元，约占 LVMH 集团 2021 年收入的三分之一， 营业利润率更是接近 50%。

tactic 方法，策略

tactic = method, approach

tactic

「方法」除了 method 还可以怎么说呢？approach 是一个很好的选择。除此之外，我们还可以用另一个名词。tactic 是指 the particular method you use to achieve sth「策略，招数」，所以在有些时候我们可以拿它来替换 method 和 approach。不过跟这俩不同的是，tactic 还常用来表示一种宏观的行动方针，简单来说，tactic 更费脑子。比如，switch tactics「改变策略」。下面我们再来看 2021 年 12 月六级听力中的这句话。
