The Duke of Sussex recently spoke about his experiences dealing with the loss of his mother, Princess Diana, when he was just 12 years old. He expressed that at the time, he felt there was no support system available to help him cope with the grief. He also mentioned that his deployment to Afghanistan later on triggered the unresolved childhood trauma. Harry admitted that he sought therapy only after reaching a breaking point where he found himself lying on the floor in a vulnerable position. Opening up about his emotions was like releasing a cork, as all the suppressed feelings came pouring out.
In collaboration with the Duchess of Sussex, Harry has produced a six-part documentary series called Heart of Invictus for Netflix. The series focuses on the Invictus Games, which Harry founded in 2014 to support wounded service personnel. These games not only encompass physically injured veterans but also address mental health challenges. In the documentary, Prince Harry shares his own experiences with mental illness, shedding light on the difficulties he faced. Reflecting upon his time serving in Afghanistan in 2012, particularly flying Apaches, Harry realized that it was a turning point leading to an unraveling of his suppressed emotions from 1997, when he lost his mother. The trauma he experienced at such a young age was never openly discussed, leading him to internalize and suppress it like many other young individuals might have done.
