到了19世纪，苹果酒的地位已经大不如前。葡萄酒产业经历了空前绝后的发展，大大挤压了苹果酒的生存空间。更加致命的一击发生在上世纪二十年代的美国，一道禁酒令横空出世，不仅是苹果酒失去销路，连种植苹果的农户们都有被极端禁酒主义者袭击果园的风险。大量专职酿酒的苹果品种被彻底摧毁，只剩可食用苹果勉强逃过一劫。

苹果种植产业只能另辟蹊径。他们从一首19世纪的威尔士的打油诗中找到了苹果与健康的关联（Eat an apple on going to bed and you’ll keep the doctor from earning his bread.），并加以改进，推出了“一天一苹果，医生远离我”的广告词（An apple a day keeps the doctor away.），在广播以及后面出现的电视上来回播放，并花费更大的精力去改良现有的食用苹果种类，最终让苹果成为了健康生活方式的代名词。
