Week 8|Make Pressure One Size Smaller
The Next Action
Pressure often becomes frightening because it arrives as a whole mountain.
It does not say only, “Finish this homework.” It brings many other voices with it: improve your grades, keep up with others, choose a direction, prepare for the future, do not fall behind. When all these voices speak at once, even a strong person may feel unable to move.
A large goal must be made smaller before it can be done.
In 1962, President Kennedy spoke at Rice University about going to the Moon. The goal was huge, but the real work could not be done by staring at the word “Moon.” It had to become research, engineering, training, testing, correction, and teamwork. The difficult thing had to be divided into parts that human hands and human minds could actually handle.
Studying is the same. “I want to improve” is too large to hold. “I will review these three formulas tonight” is smaller. “I am bad at English” is too heavy. “I will understand this passage and collect five useful expressions” is lighter. “My future is uncertain” is too wide. “I will do today’s most important task first” is something you can step on.
When pressure comes, do not argue with the whole mountain. Make it one size smaller. Then make it smaller again, until it becomes an action you can do in the next twenty minutes.
This is not escaping from the big goal. It is the only honest way to approach it. A bridge is not built by admiring the other shore. It is built by placing one solid part after another.
This week, when you feel pressure, take out a piece of paper and write one sentence: “The next action is ______.” Do not write a dream. Do not write a fear. Write an action small enough to begin now. Many heavy things become lighter after the first real move.
Source Notes
The Moon example refers to President John F. Kennedy’s “Address at Rice University on the Nation’s Space Effort,” delivered on September 12, 1962. The JFK Library records the speech and its well-known statement that the Moon goal was chosen not because it was easy, but because it was hard.
