Stone Forest — Colloquial Bilingual Tour Guide Script

Welcome & Overview

English: Alright everyone, welcome to the Stone Forest! We're about 78 kilometers southeast of downtown Kunming here, in a place called the Shilin Yi Autonomous County — "Shilin," by the way, literally means "stone forest" in Chinese, so the name kind of gives the game away. This place became a UNESCO World Geopark back in 2004, and China rated it one of the top 5A scenic spots in the country in 2007 — that's the highest rating we've got, so you're in good hands today. We'll spend about three to four hours here, and trust me, you're going to want every minute of it.

Quick tip before we start: if you're into embroidery, keep an eye out for the local Yi handiwork — headbands, aprons, little embroidered shoes, bags, tablecloths, you name it. The Yi women here have been doing this for generations, and the detail is genuinely impressive.

And if you ever get the chance to come back in late June or July on the lunar calendar, you'd catch the Torch Festival — basically the Yi New Year's Eve. Think bonfires, torches, singing, dancing, the whole village out celebrating for three days straight. It's wild.

Getting Here

English: Fun fact: there are actually two ways to get here from Kunming. The old road — the Anshi highway — takes about two hours and was the first "proper" road of its kind in all of Yunnan back in 1991. But most people these days take the expressway, which opened in 2003 and gets you here in just 45 minutes. Honestly? Take the expressway if you can — and don't worry, you're not missing much on the old road that you won't see plenty of right here.

Actually, there's a third option now too, and it's the fastest by far: the high-speed train! Both the Shanghai–Kunming and the Yungui high-speed lines stop right here, and it only takes a bit over 20 minutes from Kunming South Station to Shilin West Station — quicker than driving. Once you're off the train, there's a local bus (No. 66) into the county town, or bus No. 99, which drops you right at the entrance to the scenic area. So if you'd rather skip the driving altogether, the bullet train is honestly your best bet these days — leave Kunming after breakfast, and you could be taking photos among the rocks before lunch.

Oh, and here's a fun one — on the drive out, you pass this county called Chenggong, which is basically flower country. There's a village there, Dounan, that's one of the richest in the whole province because of its flower exports — they were flying five tons of fresh flowers a day to the Beijing Olympics back in 2008! The county's also famous for this pear called the "Pearl Pear" — supposedly it used to be sent as tribute to the emperor way back in the Yuan Dynasty, which is actually where the county's name comes from ("Chenggong" means "tribute").

You'll also cross two railway lines on the way — a narrow one built by the French back in the early 1900s (not exactly a proud chapter, if we're honest — colonial-era stuff, hauling minerals out to Vietnam), and a modern electrified one built in the '90s, which is a nice little reminder of how far things have come.

So... What Even Is a "Stone Forest"?

English: Okay, here's the thing people always ask: "Wait, it's not actually trees?" Nope! Not a single tree involved. What you're looking at is limestone — thousands of tall, jagged limestone pillars packed together so densely it genuinely looks like a forest from a distance. It's called karst landscape, and this particular patch of it is considered one of the best examples on Earth — the oldest, the biggest, and the best preserved. People here call it "the Top Wonder of China," right up there with the Yangtze's Three Gorges and the Guilin mountains.

Meet the Locals: The Sani People

English: Before we head into the rocks themselves, let's talk about the people who actually call this place home — the Sani, a branch of the larger Yi ethnic group. "Sani" literally translates to "happy people," which honestly tracks — they're known for being warm, a bit unrestrained, and they love singing, dancing, a good drink, and wrestling.

Here's a neat cultural detail: the Yi have worshipped the tiger for centuries — makes sense, their ancestors were forest hunters, and the tiger was basically the king of the jungle to them, a symbol of power. You'll see tiger motifs all over their embroidery.

And here's a fun party trick for later: you can actually tell if a Sani woman is married just by glancing at her headdress. Two little triangles standing up on either side? She's single. Just one triangle? Engaged. All black, no triangles? Married. Try it — just, y'know, maybe don't point.

Young couples here have a pretty romantic courtship tradition, too — the guy plays a bamboo flute, the girl plays a leaf like a little reed instrument, and they basically "talk" to each other through music. Better than swiping right, if you ask me.

Weddings are a whole event — the groom sends a matchmaker with wine and preserved meat to ask the bride's family for permission, and at the ceremony itself, the groom's friends have to literally sing their way through a Q&A with the bride before anyone gets to eat. No pressure.

Oh, and a few quick etiquette notes if you're ever invited into a Sani home: don't step on the cooking pots or the stove, don't sit on the doorstep, and don't call anyone "Luoluo" — it's an old word for "tiger" that was once used for their ancestors, but it's not really appropriate to use casually today.

Stone Forest Lake

English: First stop inside — this lake wasn't even here originally. Zhou Enlai, the former Chinese premier, visited back in 1955 and basically said, "you know what this place needs? Water." So they dug an artificial lake, and honestly, he was right — it softens the whole scene, gives the rocks something to reflect in. Locals also call it Guanyin Lake, because if you squint, one of the rocks in there looks just like the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy. See if you can spot her.

Into the Big Stone Forest

English: Right, this is where things get fun. First up — Lion Pond, named because the rocks around it genuinely look like a bunch of lions goofing around together. Right beside it is Lion Pavilion, the highest point in the whole park at 1,750 meters — climb up there and you get this incredible view over the entire Stone Forest. Depending on the light, it looks completely different — like waves under cloud cover, like flames in full sun, like an ink painting when it's raining. Same rocks, totally different mood every time.

Just past there, keep an eye out for two rocks that look uncannily like a couple of buffalo lounging in a pond — heads up, backs poking out of the water. Classic farm-scene vibe, very photogenic.

Then you'll hit the Rock Screen — this massive slab of stone that just completely blocks your view, like nature's version of a "no peeking" sign. Right next to it, there's a couplet carved into the rock by Marshal Zhu De, a big name in Chinese revolutionary history, who visited in 1962 and was apparently so blown away he wrote a poem on the spot. Loosely translated: "peaks that pierce the sky, stone screens stacked like jade." Not bad for an off-the-cuff reaction.

Keep going and you'll reach the real photo op — a huge rock with the words "Stone Forest" carved into it in bold red characters. This is THE shot everyone gets. Fun bit of trivia: the name was actually coined by Long Yun, Yunnan's governor back in 1931, who was so stunned by the place he just... named it on the spot. Simple, direct, and it stuck.

A little further on, you'll see a massive boulder that looks like it's about to topple off its perch — it's called "Hair-trigger Danger" because it genuinely looks like one gentle nudge would send it tumbling. Don't worry, though — that thing has survived multiple earthquakes over the centuries. It's not going anywhere. Local legend says Sani guys used to sing loudly here to impress the girls — basically an ancient version of showing off.

From there we head into Sword Mountain, where the limestone has eroded into these narrow, blade-like spikes — genuinely looks like a forest of swords stuck in the ground. Nature had a lot of time on its hands here — millions of years of water slowly carving these shapes.

Behind that is a shady little courtyard people call "the Ideal Place for a Short Break" — which, fair enough, it really is. There's a quote carved above a small cave here from a Qing dynasty official, basically saying "the ocean is vast because it accepts every river, and a rock is strong because it wants for nothing." Deep stuff, and a nice spot to catch your breath.

Next up is Sword Peak Pond — surrounded by these sharp rock spires that really do look like a bundle of swords standing upright. There's a broken stone pillar in the middle — it used to be a full peak until an earthquake in 1833 snapped the top clean off. The water here is spring-fed, crystal clear all year, and locals call it "the eye of the Stone Forest." It's genuinely one of the more peaceful corners of the whole park.

Right after that is the Narrowest Pass — and I mean narrow, only 30 centimeters wide, just enough for one person to squeeze through sideways. Local belief says if you get through without any trouble, you're in for some good luck. Give it a shot!

Then there's this little cave called the Window of Grand View — poke your head out and you'll suddenly feel like you're standing on top of the world, sky close enough to touch, ground impossibly far below.

The rest of the Big Stone Forest is basically one big game of "guess the shape" — there's Two Feeding Birds (locals say it symbolizes a mother's love), Elephant on the Platform, the Ten-thousand-year Tortoise, and the Stone Bell, which — I kid you not — actually rings like a bell if you tap it, because it's hollow inside. Give it a knock.

Last stop in this section is the View-watching Pavilion, sitting up on a 30-meter rock, first built in 1931. Great spot to catch your breath and take in the whole view before we head to the Small Stone Forest.

The Small Stone Forest

English: If the Big Stone Forest is the tough, muscular one, the Small Stone Forest is its more graceful, delicate sibling — the rocks here are more scattered, spread out, softer somehow.

Right at the entrance, there's Lotus Lake, named after a rock that looks like a lotus in full bloom. It's a lovely, relaxed spot — grab a seat, feed the fish, take a breather. There are also four rocks by the water that look eerily like the four main characters from Journey to the West — if you know the story of the Monkey King, keep an eye out for him and his crew.

But the real star of the Small Stone Forest is a rock called Ashima. She's the heroine of a famous Sani folk poem — beautiful, kind, brave, and she refused to bow to a cruel landlord who wanted to force her into marriage. She chose freedom and true love instead, even though it cost her everything. It's a story that's been passed down for generations here, and this rock — which really does look like a young woman standing quietly, gazing into the distance with a basket on her back — is considered her living embodiment. She's actually become the official symbol of Yunnan tourism, so this is a big deal.

At the exit, there's usually a live performance — traditional Sani singing and dancing, especially lively if you catch it during festival season. If you're ever here for the Torch Festival, you'll see the whole community out with torches, bonfires, wrestling matches, even horse racing. It's honestly one of the best times to visit if your schedule allows it.

Bonus: The Naigu Stone Forest

English: If you've got extra time, the Naigu Stone Forest is worth the short trip — about 8 kilometers east of here. It only opened to the public in 2010, and it's got a totally different vibe: darker, rougher limestone, almost like an abandoned castle. "Naigu" actually means "primitive" and "black" in the Yi language, and honestly, that sums it up pretty well. There's even a section nicknamed "One Rock Makes a Forest" — from a distance the pillars look separate, but get closer and you realize they're all connected at the base. Nature's optical illusion.

English: And that's the tour! Any questions before we move on?(陈大衡和他的AI)
