据《The Athletic》报道，阿斯顿维拉曾花了一个多月追逐米兰左后卫埃斯图皮尼安，但因条件不断变化而拖延，随后转向鲁杰里。
《The Athletic》称，埃梅里此前曾在比利亚雷亚尔执教时与埃斯图皮尼安合作过，球员又由门德斯代理，因此这笔转会一度很合理。但维拉的谈判迟迟没有推进，最终耐心耗尽，俱乐部改追鲁杰里。
