韩国导演李沧东认为，每一个伟大的爱情故事，本质上都是关于“不能发生的爱”——阶级、身份或命运横亘其中。而他的新片则大胆提出了相反的问题。据外媒报道，为了找到值得拍摄的答案，他花了近二十年时间，期间放弃了一个关于2009年工人罢工的剧本，最终从联合编剧的一个想法中获得了灵感。
