李益 Li Yi(748?‑829?),字君虞,陇西姑臧人。

On Hearing a Reed Flute atop ShouxiangWall at Night
Snow-like sand spreads beneath HuoleBeacon;
Frost-like moon glimmers beyond Shouxiangstronghold.
Whence the reed pipe’s strain, no one cantell;
All night, the frontier troops yearn fortheir homeland.
“Snow-like sand”“Frost-like moon” 对应“沙似雪”“月如霜”,比喻结构保留,英语读者一眼可懂。
“Whence the reed pipe’s strain, no one cantell; / All night, the frontier troops yearn for their homeland.”
“Snow-likesand spreads beneath Huole Beacon; / Frost-like moon glimmers beyond Shouxiangstronghold.”

Listening to a Reed Pipe at Night on theSurrender Wall
Sand before the Hu-lo beacon is like snow,
Moon outside the Surrender Wall like frost.
Somewhere a reed pipe plays—
All night the frontier men stare towardhome.
(Burton Watson:ChineseLyricism: Shih Poetry from the Second to the Twelfth Century,Columbia University Press,1971,p.192)
Listening to a Reed Pipe at Night on the Surrender Wall
2.前两句比喻保留得极好“Sandbefore the Hu-lo beacon is like snow, / Moon outside the Surrender Wall likefrost.”
“All night the frontier men staretoward home.”“stare toward home” 把“尽望乡”的“望”字落实为视觉动作,比卓振英的“yearn for their homeland” 更贴原诗——征人是整夜望着故乡方向,不是单纯“思念”。

On Hearing a Flute at Night Atop theVictor's Wall
Below the beacon tower sand looks white assnow;
Beyond the Victor's Wall like frost coldmoonbeams flow.
None knows from where a flute blows anostalgic song;
All warriors lie awake homesick the wholenight long.
“None knowsfrom where a flute blows a nostalgic song” 把“芦管”译成 “flute”,把“吹”译成“blows”,把笛声直接定性为 “nostalgic song”(思乡曲),让读者立刻明白笛声的感染力。
前两句对仗工整(below / beyond,beacon tower / Victor's Wall),但后两句节奏松散,“None knows from where” 和 “All warriors lieawake” 长度差异大,读起来不如前两句顺。且 “blows a nostalgic song”中 “blows” 和 “song” 搭配稍显生硬。

Hearing a Reed Pipe atop Shouxiang Fortat Night
By Li Yi (Tang Dynasty)
Translated by Wang yongli
Before Huile Beacon, sands like snow arespread;
O’er Shouxiang Fort, moon frost‑like beams are shed.
None knows from where the reed‑pipe’splaintive strains take flight;
All warriors gaze homeward through thelivelong night.
Note:
1). Shouxiang Fort: A key frontier fortressbuilt in Tang‑dynasty China,named for the historical event when Emperor Taizong received the surrender ofTurkic tribes here.
2). Huile Beacon: A beacon‑tower near Huile county along the northern frontier, the vantage‑point where the poet stands.
3). reed‑pipe: A wind instrument of nomadic origin, common on Tangborderlands, noted for its plaintive, desolate tone.
