Walking through the morning market of 古凉州, I counted the trades around me: the noodle-puller, the jade polisher, the tour guide, the kid cramming for exams. An old phrase covers them all: 三教九流, "three teachings, nine streams." It began as a map of thought, the many schools of pre-Qin China, and gradually slid into a ranking of jobs and people. My own essay, 《交游小赋》, opens with a line I still test myself against: 「夫时移则事异，人变则心迁。历岁月之长河，识人情之冷暖。」Time moves, so matters change; people change, so hearts shift. You cannot walk through life with one fixed script for everyone.

So what is the craft? An old Chinese rulebook of human nature offers a compact set of openings. To the struggling, lead with practical benefit（穷者重利，以利切入）; to the lowly, lead with respect（弱者重尊，以谦切入）; to the powerful, lead with results（强者重果，以事切入）; to the elder, lead with courtesy（老者重捧，以礼切入）; to the wise, lead with sincerity（智者重真，以诚切入）. Five openings, one principle: meet people where they are. My own universal order is simpler. Listen first: let them finish, don't rush to rebut. Then conclusions, then reasons. And when tempers rise, catch the feeling before you argue the logic.

There is a hard truth in it too. My fellow townsman, the writer 许开祯, put it bluntly: past the halfway mark, every step upward needs someone pulling, someone steadying, someone pushing. The jianghu where pure solo effort was enough is gone. I resist the cynical reading, but I accept the practical one: dealing with all kinds of people is not flattery, it is a skill, and like any skill it must transfer. That is why today's focus is transfer itself. A craft that works in one room and dies in the next was never really learned.

And where do people actually practice it? The doors are more ordinary than we admit: a volunteer shift at the nursing home, a spinning class, a weekend hiking group, an English corner, a trade fair, a board-game night, a camping trip, an online group that finally meets offline. The list barely matters; the heartbeat underneath it does. Show up, again and again, and become worth meeting first, because the price of a better circle has never changed. A social circle is not found; it is steeped, like tea, by staying in the water long enough. 茶要泡，圈子也是。

语法笔记

Today's grammar is the advice pattern "with X, lead with Y", built from those five old openings.

• With a results-driven boss, lead with the conclusion, not the process.（对结果导向的人，先给结论）

• With a sensitive teammate, lead with praise, then suggest, then encourage.（肯定＋建议＋鼓励的三明治）

• With a skeptical client, lead with data; feelings will not move them.

Notice two fixed habits. First, lead with takes a noun or gerund: lead with facts, lead with listening. Second, the pattern expands into a full conditional: If you are dealing with an impulsive person, give the result first and backfill the details later. Both forms carry the same logic: tailor the opening, not the truth. 真话不打折，开口看人。

One warning from my own drafts: I once wrote deal with different people is important. Wrong. Dealing is a gerund here, so it needs the -ing: Dealing with different people is a skill, not a talent.

A 30-second drill（开口前先填空，答案不唯一）：

1. With a first-time client, lead with ___.（your track record? a small win?）

2. With an old friend, lead with ___.（honesty, not diplomacy）

3. With a tired colleague, lead with ___.（the good news first）

1. ❌ I want to make friend with him. → ✅ I want to make friends with him. 我想跟他交个朋友。（friend 在此固定用复数）

2. ❌ His EQ is very high. → ✅ He reads people well. / He is emotionally intelligent. 他很会看人，情商很高。（read the room 的 read 就从这来）

3. ❌ I will chat with him deeply. → ✅ I hope we can have a heart-to-heart. 我希望我们能推心置腹地谈一次。（深谈不是深度聊天）

4. ❌ He is a high person. → ✅ He holds a senior position. 他职位很高。（"高"的是职位不是人）

5. ❌ Deal with different people is important. → ✅ Dealing with different people matters. 与不同的人打交道很重要。（动名词作主语）

6. ❌ I don't like communicate with strangers. → ✅ I find it hard to open up to strangers. 我很难对陌生人敞开心扉。（open up 才是"打开话匣子"）

7. ❌ I very like this city. → ✅ I really like this city. 我真的很喜欢这座城。（very 不能直接修饰动词）

8. ❌ He is a talkative person, I feel tired with him. → ✅ He talks a lot, and I find him hard to keep up with. 他很能说，跟他聊天我很吃力。（两个意思拆两句，别用逗号硬连）

• deal with → handle / navigate / manage / work with（应付、周旋）

• different people → all walks of life / all sorts of folks / people from every background（形形色色的人）

用法提醒：Speaking 里替换词用一两个就够，别堆；Writing 里换在段首，考官一眼看到词汇宽度。

学科短文 · Biology: Specialists and Generalists

In ecology, a specialist species thrives in a narrow niche: the koala eats little besides eucalyptus, and within that world it has no rival. A generalist species, like the raccoon or the rat, samples everything: forest, city, garbage bin, riverbank. When the environment is stable, specialists win; when the environment shifts, generalists survive. Specialists trade flexibility for mastery; generalists trade mastery for options.

The writer Robert Heinlein compressed this into one line in his 1973 novel Time Enough for Love: "Specialization is for insects." Biologically, he was nearly right. Insects dominate by hyper-specialization, one species locked to one plant or one host. Humans dominate by the opposite strategy: we are the ultimate generalists, and our signature skill is not any single ability but the transfer of abilities across settings. The hunter who became a farmer, the scribe who became a merchant, the monk who became an astronomer: each carried an old craft into a new room.

Nature keeps a ledger of both strategies. The giant panda bets everything on bamboo: one food, one forest, and a population that wobbles whenever the forest does. The crow bets on everything: seeds, insects, fries, whatever the city drops. Pandas are beloved and precarious; crows are unloved and everywhere. Neither strategy is wrong, but when the task is surviving an unknown future, the crow's résumé reads better. 专精赢得掌声，通才活过寒冬。

词源子段：specialist 来自拉丁 species（外貌、种类），本义"看出来的那一类"，同族 respect（回看）、suspect（从下看）；generalist 来自 genus（种类、族），同族 generous（出身高贵的慷慨）、genius（与生俱来的守护神）；insect 来自拉丁 insectum（被切开的），取其身体分节之形。一个"看类别"，一个"看出身"，一个"看身形"，三种观察，三种命名。

So when Heinlein jokes that specialization is for insects, the sting is in the tail: insects are magnificent specialists, and they flourished for four hundred million years. His real point is about us. A person who can only thrive in one niche is betting the environment never changes. 敬专精，但留退路。

「契苾小优《交游小赋》」节选：夫时移则事异，人变则心迁。历岁月之长河，识人情之冷暖。这是我自己的句子，今天拿它当金句来拆。My own line, so I get the honour of taking it apart.

时，从日，太阳走的刻度就是时间。时 comes from 日, the sun: time is the track the sun walks. 移，从禾，本义是移栽禾苗，把活的苗从旧土拔起、种进新田，这不就是「迁移」最古老的象形吗。移 comes from 禾, a grain seedling: its oldest sense is transplanting, pulling a living sprout out of old soil and setting it into new fields. If that is not the oldest picture of transfer, what is? 异，甲骨文取戴面具之人，引申为不同。异 began in oracle-bone script as a figure wearing a mask, and grew into "different". 迁，从走之底，一切的迁移都靠走。迁 carries the walking radical 辶, because every transfer, in the end, must be walked.

四个字里藏着整条今天的主题：时在走，事在变，人在变，心也在变；所谓和不同的人打交道，不过是承认这个「变」字，然后跟着走。Four characters, one theme: time walks, matters change, people change, hearts change; dealing with different people is simply admitting the change, then walking with it.

同段可对读两处古语。《礼记》「独学而无友，则孤陋寡闻」：学习没有同伴，见识就窄。Study without companions, and the mind narrows. 《管子·权修》「观其交游，则其贤不肖可察也」：看一个人与什么人来往，就能看出他的品性。Watch who a person walks with, and you can judge their worth. 交游从来不是请客吃饭，它是一门识人也自识的功课。Jiaoyou was never small talk; it is a course in reading others and yourself.

心境收束：历岁月之长河，不是为了变冷，是为了识尽冷暖之后，仍然愿意先听、后说、接住别人的感受。The closing thought: crossing the long river of years is not meant to chill us; it is meant to leave us willing, after knowing all the warmth and cold, to listen first, speak second, and catch what others feel.

The column chart tracks the number of completion certificates (compostelas) issued by the Pilgrim's Office in Santiago de Compostela for selected years. Two Holy Years spike above their neighbours, 179,944 in 2004 and 272,135 in 2010, both marked in orange. After the pre-pandemic peak of 347,578 in 2019, the series collapses to 41,217 in 2020, recovers to 131,117 in 2021, and then runs three consecutive record years: 438,307 in 2022, 446,082 in 2023, and 499,239 in 2024, with 530,723 in 2025 crossing the half-million line.

Two reading disciplines matter. First, compostelas do not count all visitors: the certificate requires at least the final 100 kilometres on foot (or 200 by bicycle), stamped in a pilgrim's credential, so the chart measures committed walkers, not casual tourists. Second, the spikes are partly calendar-made: a Holy Year, when the feast of St James falls on a Sunday, reliably lifts the line, so comparing 2010 with 2011 is a different question from comparing 2022 with 2023. The road you met in the previous section keeps its books in order: strangers keep coming, and the office keeps counting.

引导理解（从凉州看世界）

I keep coming back to a hill outside my hometown. 凉州莲花山（姑臧紫山）, on the edge of 古凉州, is where the three teachings, Confucian, Buddhist, and Daoist, stood side by side for centuries, not as rivals but as neighbors. My own 《凉州学论》 tries to name what that means: 「非纯于一源，兼收并蓄三教九流」「藏于庙堂，流于市井；显隐相济，涵养百家」. A culture that is not pure in origin but absorptive by habit. Diversity was never a modern slogan there; it was a landscape.

The hill also produced a walking lesson in transfer. 李自标 (1760 至 1828) grew up at its foot, left at thirteen for the Collegio de Cinesi in Naples, and returned to serve as interpreter for the Macartney embassy of 1793. A boy from the Hexi corridor carried his languages into European courts: nothing in his birthplace predicted it, and nothing in Naples could replace what the hillside gave him. That is what it means for a skill to travel.

And the world keeps its own versions of the same craft. Jiaoyou was never a Chinese patent. The Grand Tour sent young British graduates across the Channel in the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries: months in France and Italy, learning languages and collecting patrons, treating the acquaintance of Europe's elites as a coming-of-age course. In Paris salons, a chair and a pot of coffee could seat Voltaire, Rousseau, and Diderot in one room, while eighteenth-century London coffeehouses earned the nickname penny universities: one penny bought the coffee, and free admission to any table's argument.

The older roads ran on mutual aid. The Camino de Santiago was perhaps Europe's oldest network of strangers helping strangers, sharing bread, road, and night watches; in the Arab desert, sheltering a traveler for three nights without asking his name was a duty of survival. In 1912 a German teacher, Richard Schirrmann, opened the first youth hostel so that poor young travelers could still meet the world, and after two world wars volunteers built hospitality networks whose charter reads like a peace treaty.

Today the design repeats itself with new names: Erasmus semesters, home exchanges, WWOOF farm stays, couchsurfing, digital-nomad hubs in Bali or Lisbon. One instruction underneath them all: leave your circle, let walking and hospitality turn strangers into classmates. A Suzhou youth, Zhong Yi, crossed most of China in 2003 on three thousand yuan by sleeping in netizens' homes, and later wrote it up as a manual of mutual-aid travel; today's city-swap tourism among Chinese students is the same instinct cycling back. Brazilian Portuguese even coined saudade for the ache of missing far-off friends, and the Japanese toji hot-spring stay, with its shared bath and canteen, could be transplanted to an old Liangzhou teahouse without translation. 「读万卷书，行万里路」was never only ours: it is one human instinct wearing different clothes.

And the town keeps its own blunt voice. My fellow townsman, the writer 许开祯, wrote: 往上走的每一步，都需要有人拉拽、有人抚帮、有人推顶。纯粹靠自己努力的江湖已经不在。 His point is not that effort is worthless; it is that effort needs company. 上交不谄，下交不渎：treat no one as a ladder, treat no one as a floor. Whether you read the five old openings or the arithmetic of trust in 管鲍之交, the lesson converges: 状元 comes from every trade, and every trade, including the trade of dealing with people, also needs its 状元. That is the whole sentence in the title. 行行出状元，行行也需要状元。武威籍知名作家许开祯说过这么一段话，我印象非常深刻：「成年以后，我们用来混圈子的时间、精力，远多于读书、做事所熬费的心力。我们能否有大成就，一半在于我们自己的努力，一半甚至超一半在于我们在圈子里的地位、影响力、人情指数等。也有不信邪不服气的，不尿所谓的圈子，认为靠自己不凡的能力与天资与努力，可以登上事业的顶。但到了半腰才：发现，往上走的每一步，都需要有人拉拽有人抚帮有人哟喝有人推顶。纯粹靠自己努力的江湖已经不在，现有的江湖，都占满了王，而你不在王旗下，你的路己然到头。这时候再后悔，或者再想拜码头，已决然没了机会。所以，真正的高手，半路上就出局了。一切皆是。」

Behind the title sits a personal ledger, and it reads like this. Learn a language, and the circle widens: more friends, from more worlds, each one a new window. Walk between cultures for a while, and the eye widens: you stop assuming your way is the only way, because you have watched three teachings share one mountain. And once enough worlds have passed through you, ideas stop living in one room; they start migrating, cross-breeding, refusing to be fenced. 语言开门，跨文化开眼，见得多了，想法就不容易被关进一个格子。That, more than any band score, is what this daily practice is actually for.
