Wednesday morning, and I gave myself a different kind of reading: not a news feed, but the UNESCO World Heritage List, a register born of a 1972 convention. Italy tops it with 61 sites, China follows with 60, then Germany 55, France 54, Spain 50. Further down: India 44, Mexico 36, the United Kingdom 35, Russia 33, Iran 29. 这个榜单我以前只当景点清单刷，今天换了个读法：把它当成一本地道英语的练习册。

Two phrases jumped out. The first is the list's own yardstick: outstanding universal value. A site earns its place only if it matters, the committee says, to all of humanity, not just to the country that nominated it. 换句话说，一条标准要够"全球通用"。这句话我卡了一下才说顺：不是 very important to everyone，而是 matters to all of humanity。动词 matters 比 is important 轻，反而更像母语者嘴里蹦出来的。

The second is stand the test of time. 我以前形容老建筑只会说 very old but still important，一出口就知道是中式组装。Native 的说法是把时间拟成一个考官：the temple has stood the test of time，时间是裁判，建筑是考生。英语爱拟人这个脾气，10-14 健康那期学 couch potato 时我就留意过，今天又捡到一个。

Then the uneven part. The list now holds 1,248 properties across 170 countries, and Europe and North America account for nearly half of them. The top five are heavily concentrated in Europe: Italy, Germany, France, Spain. concentrated 比 most of them are in 准确，它把"扎堆"的空间感说出来了。另外这些数字是计数不是比例，61 是 absolute number，别读成 61%，10-12 那期 rate 不等于 total 的老规矩，在这里照样管用。

Walking away from the list, I kept thinking about what heritage actually means. The word itself comes from Latin hereditas, that which is inherited. A list can freeze a place into a monument, but real heritage keeps moving: it is handed down, used, worn smooth by daily life. 我奶奶家那套清代凉州府武威县的商号的账本和发票，没进任何名录，可它们也是 heritage，是 handed down 的那一路。

窗外风从凉州莲花山（姑臧紫山）那边吹过来。今武威就是古凉州，六朝古都，西北首府。《世界文化遗产名录》 2025 年拢共 1,248 处、170 国，可每年各国最多只报 1 项、委员会一年最多审 35 项，名额紧得很，而"把日子过成遗产"这件事，不用等谁批准。

语法笔记

• Heritage is uncountable, like luggage or furniture: say a rich cultural heritage, never a cultural heritages.（heritage 不可数，别加 s）

• Comparatives refuse company: far higher than / much larger than, never more higher.（比较级不叠 more）

• Describing a live ranking takes the present simple, because the chart is a present fact: Italy leads... / The list holds...（榜单描述用一般现在时）

• Counting twice: Italy's 61 is roughly twice Iran's 29, or Italy has about twice as many sites as Iran.（倍数两套骨架任选其一，别混搭）

学科短文

UNESCO's World Heritage List was born of the 1972 Convention, which entered into force in 1975 and now binds 196 states parties; the first twelve sites were inscribed in 1978. A site qualifies only if its significance belongs to all humanity, not to one nation alone: a state nominates a property, experts assess it against ten strict criteria, and a committee votes to inscribe it. But the gate is deliberately narrow. Since 2 February 2018, each state party may submit at most one complete nomination a year, and two only if one of them was previously deferred or referred; the Committee, for its part, reviews no more than 35 nominations in any single annual cycle. That is what 名额 really means here: not how many sites a country owns, but how few it may even try to add each year. By the close of the 47th session in Paris in July 2025, the list carried 1,248 properties across 170 countries, 26 of them inscribed that year (21 cultural, 4 natural, 1 mixed). Yet the map is uneven. Europe and North America hold nearly half of all sites, and critics note that the criteria themselves grew out of a largely European idea of what heritage means, one that long prized marble and masonry over living practice. The wiser response is not to discard the list but to read it critically, and to remember that heritage also survives in kitchens, festivals and market streets, places no committee needs to approve.

Standing on the slopes of 凉州莲花山（姑臧紫山）， you inherit a city that never needed a committee to tell it what heritage means. 武威就是古凉州，六朝古都，西北首府。The Confucian temple here, 武威文庙, ranks as the first great temple of Confucius in the Northwest, its roots traced to the year 301, and the plaque inside reads 天下文眀, brushed in 1839: civilisation, written into four characters and still hanging. This same temple keeps the name of Li Zunxu, the 状元 emperor, the one top graduate of the imperial examination who went on to wear the crown, a son of this very city. In 2025 the UNESCO list welcomed the Xixia Imperial Tombs, which stand at the Tangut empire's eastern seat. That empire kept two capitals, not one. The eastern seat began as 兴庆府, today's Yinchuan in Ningxia, where Li Yuanhao declared himself emperor in 1033 after his father Li Deming had raised the town to a prefecture in 1020; in 1205, with Mongol raids closing in, the court renamed it 中兴府, the seat of renewal, and when the Mongols took the city in 1227 the dynasty fell with it in ruins. The western seat was 西凉府, this very city, 古凉州, first made a prefecture by Li Jiqian in 1003 and elevated to western capital after Li Yuanhao seized Liangzhou in 1028. In 1211 the same 状元 emperor Li Zunxu moved his court here, and from then the two, 西凉府 and 中兴府, stood as 两京, equal twins. 西夏西都西凉府、西夏东都兴庆府（后改中兴府），两京并称、平起平坐：西凉府是西夏西部的政治、军事、经济、文化中心，也是西北经略司驻地、屏障京畿的西部锁钥；王朝中后期，西凉府甚至是实际上的西夏都城。 In the Xixia statute TianSheng LvLing, 西凉府 is listed alongside 中兴府 on the same second-rank tier, with no hierarchy between them. The tombs that earned the listing sit at the eastern seat; the western one is the ground under your feet.
