Grand Canal Media News: From July 18th to 25th, the "Head to the Mountains and Seas" team from Tianjin University visited Huaibei City and Suzhou City in Anhui Province. Over the course of eight days, the students followed the historical trails, explored the roots of civilization at the ruins, recorded stories of intangible cultural heritage in the streets and alleys, felt the great strength of the people in the red-earthed areas, and sowed seeds of culture in the classrooms. Their aim was to understand how the thousand-year-old canal has undergone a remarkable transformation from being "activated" to being "transformed" in contemporary northern Anhui.

The exposed piers and damaged ships in the Liuzi Canal ruins serve as a three-dimensional textbook for understanding ancient water conservancy projects. At the Huaibei City Museum, the resting Tang Dynasty cargo ship and the "Huaibei rudder" became the first focal points of investigation. The team members noticed that this massive wooden rudder has a thick handle and broad blades, with its mortise and tenon structure clearly visible. Without excessive decoration, it directly demonstrates the mechanical structure and construction scale of ancient inland shipping. Moving on to the "Liuzi Splendor" exhibition hall, a 52-meter-long Dongyang wooden carving mural brings history back to life. Based on the Song Dynasty's "Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival," the mural intricately reproduces the bustling river and crowded marketplace of that era, incorporating local Huaibei characteristics. Subsequently, the team visited the Liuzi Canal Bridge Ruins Museum, where a complete ancient riverbed is preserved. They squatted on the edge of the excavation site, carefully observing the deep grooves created by ropes and the layers of silt from different historical periods. "A thousand years ago, this was a thoroughfare bustling with boats and merchants; even a thousand years later, standing beside the Liuzi Canal bridge ruins, we can still feel the vitality of this ancient river."One of the team members expressed such feelings during the observation. This visit enabled the students to gain a deep understanding of the historical significance of the Tongji Canal as a vital hub that controlled traffic in the surrounding regions, and it laid a solid foundation for further research.

Leaving the archaeological site, the practice team entered the ancient city of Linhuan. In front of the workbenches of intangible cultural heritage inheritors, they felt the pulse of canal culture. The aroma of Bamboobamboo tea filled the old streets, and the team discovered that the wisdom of grassroots governance—known as the "One Cup of Tea Mediation Method"— originated there. At Yixin Tea House, a mediator nicknamed "Aqing's Wife" by the locals demonstrated the tea-making process to the team members. The scalding tea acted as a relaxant, helping to calm emotions; the "public opinion forum" at the tea table allowed the parties involved to maintain their dignity, leading to a quiet reconciliation amidst advice to "step back." This wisdom, which originated from the canal docks and became prevalent in the markets, effectively repaired neighborhood relations, putting into practice the old saying that "close neighbors are better than distant relatives." The team was also intrigued by a traditional health-preserving herbal tea house. Dr. Yang, in her seventies, used sesame leaves and straw from the fields to make herbal tea, embodying the folk wisdom that "food and medicine share the same origins." As one of "the nation's most beautiful rural doctors," she has kept the price of her herbal tea unchanged for over a decade. Her compassionate heart reflects the kind and simple nature of the people living along both banks of the canal. Meanwhile, the intricate stitching of Yang's sachets, the exquisite craftsmanship of brocade carvings, and the rich flavor of traditional rice wine were all unveiled before the team's eyes.

The northern part of Anhui not only bears the legacy of the thousand-year-old canals but also is marked by traces of revolutionary history. At the site of the General Command Headquarters for the Huaihai Campaign, the group experienced firsthand the power of a “people’s war.” The statement “The victory in the Huaihai Campaign was achieved through the efforts of the people” remains profoundly impactful even today. At the Zhongyuange Red Culture Museum, Mr. Zhong Xin, known as a “Good Person of China,” has devoted decades to preserving this red heritage. He said, “These things no longer belong to me; they are the wealth of entire nation. I hope that future generations will always remember the path they have taken.”

As history moves forward, northern Anhui is also undergoing a transformation from an area based on industrial resources to one with a strong cultural identity. In the 1956 Culture Park in Suzhou, the group witnessed how industrial relics can be transformed into beautiful spaces. What used to be an industrial area filled with machinery now features red brick walls from old factories, which have been turned into places offering dining services, bookstores, and cultural activities. Among the most notable features is the old teahouse in the park; every afternoon, local residents gather there, where the sound of tea preparation, music, and conversations creates a pleasant atmosphere. This model of renewal aligns with the concept of “activation–transformation–evolution” applied in the development of cultural zones along the canals.

The seeds of culture need to be nurtured in fertile soil in order to flourish. At the charitable tutoring class organized by the Communist Youth League Committee of Suixi County, the practice team conducted a unique presentation on Canal culture. Facing the curious gazes of the children, the team members changed their way of speaking; they started by talking about the ancient city walls that the children were familiar with and about the sesame cakes they loved to eat. In doing so, they managed to transform the grand history of canal transportation into stories that locals could take pride in. Subsequently, the team visited the Communist Youth League Committee of Suixi County. Xu Yaxian, Director of the Committee, Ding Xin, Director of the County Cultural Heritage Preservation Center, Li Jiandong—the inheritor of “Huaibei clay sculpture”, a provincial-level intangible cultural heritage—and Zhao Peng, head of the charitable tutoring class, all extended a warm welcome to them. During the meeting, the team discussed issues related to local economic development, cultural tourism, cultural preservation, and educational support. They also addressed real-life challenges such as difficulties in developing canal-related tourism and a lack of available learning resources.

The photo shows a symposium held between the “Journey to the Mountains and Seas” team from Tianjin University and the Communist Youth League Committee of Suixi County.

From the archaeological evidence unearthed at these underground sites to the vibrant transmission of intangible cultural heritage at our fingertips; from the red memories associated with the Huaihai Campaign to the creative revitalization of the industrial decline zones, the trip of the students from Tianjin University to northern Anhui was a journey to explore the cultural context of this region’s canals. What they saw were not only remnants of history but also the realities of contemporary life and the hopes for the future.
