LTG Infra, the Lithuanian rail infrastructure manager, is set to modernise its traffic management system in collaboration with the Spanish technology company Indra. The new TMS 3.0 platform will enable a higher degree of automation, including the automatic identification of potential traffic conflicts.
LTG Infra, the Lithuanian railway infrastructure manager, has signed a contract with Indra, a Spanish company specialising in transport technology and systems, to modernise its rail traffic management system.
The project will involve the implementation of the TMS 3.0 version, and the supplier will provide technical maintenance for the system for the next ten years.
The Lithuanian company describes the project as one of the most significant technological advances achieved in recent years in the country’s railway infrastructure. The new platform should enable further digitalisation of network management, increase operational efficiency and improve the utilisation of existing capacity, whilst also enhancing safety and cyber resilience.
“The rail traffic management system is one of the most important elements of the infrastructure, ensuring the safe and smooth movement of trains across the entire network. By modernising it, we are laying the foundations for more efficient, automated rail management that is adapted to the needs of the future,” said Vytis Žalimas, director of LTG Infra.
According to him, the investment will enable more efficient use of the network’s capacity and will increase the safety and reliability of the infrastructure.
Cloud-based system and microservices
The TMS 3.0 version utilises cloud computing technologies and a microservices-based architecture.
This structure allows for the gradual introduction of new functions and the expansion of the system without the need to modify the entire platform architecture.
For dispatchers and specialists managing rail traffic, the new system will provide a unified and integrated view of the network’s operation, based on real-time information.
LTG Infra estimates that this will enable faster decision-making, optimised planning and traffic management, more efficient use of infrastructure capacity and reduced operating costs.
The system will automatically identify traffic conflicts
One of the main new features introduced by TMS 3.0 is an increased level of automation.
The platform will be able to automatically identify potential traffic conflicts and help operators resolve them in real time. The aim is to reduce disruptions and speed up operational decisions in network management.
At the same time, the system will need to meet high standards of quality, reliability and safety, including in the management of functions critical to traffic safety.
The modular architecture will also enable faster calculations, streamline planning processes and facilitate the integration of new traffic management functions within the same technological platform.
As a result, the system can be gradually expanded as the requirements of the rail sector and the technologies used on the network evolve.
LTG Infra is part of the Lithuanian railway group LTG, the largest railway group in the Baltic states. Its activities include rail freight and passenger transport, as well as the management, maintenance and development of public railway infrastructure. The group also comprises LTG Cargo, LTG Link and GTC.
