1. Metropolitan Opera House（林肯中心大都会歌剧院）

2. Geffen Hall（林肯中心大卫・格芬厅，原 Avery Fisher Hall）

3. David H. Koch Theater（林肯中心大卫・科赫剧院）

4. Vivian Beaumont Theater（林肯中心薇薇安・博蒙特剧院）

Alice Tully Hall is housed within the Juilliard School building, across the street from the main Lincoln Center campus

【New York·Vista】Series｜Separated by One Street, Two Distinct Halls｜A Close Look at Lincoln Center, a Common Misconception Among Chinese Audiences

图片

Caption: Panoramic view of Lincoln Center campus

To countless music lovers around the world, Lincoln Center in New York stands as a sacred shrine for the performing arts.

Here, opera, symphony, ballet and theatre unfold on world-famous stages, representing the pinnacle of Western classical performing arts.

I have had the honour to host and perform many times atofficial Lincoln Center venues within the Lincoln Center campus, and I have long been immersed in New York’s arts community. In conversations with Joseph Colaneri, principal guest conductor of the Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center, I have clarified a widespread misunderstanding among Chinese audiences and event organisers:

Many concerts promoted under the name “Lincoln Center Concert” are, in fact, staged outside the Lincoln Center campus and are certainly not genuine Lincoln Center theatres.

Drawing on my own experience performing atofficial Lincoln Center venues within the Lincoln Center campus

I. What Lincoln Center Truly Is: More Than a Single Hall

Many people mistakenly think Lincoln Center is just one concert hall. It is an entire campus.

Lincoln Center occupies the block on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, bounded byto the south,to the north, Columbus Avenue to the east and Amsterdam Avenue to the west. Completed in the 1960s, it is one of America’s largest and most distinguished performing arts campuses. Only the venues inside this campus count asofficial Lincoln Center venues within the Lincoln Center campus: the Metropolitan Opera House, David Geffen Hall, David H. Koch Theater, Vivian Beaumont Theater and the Library for the Performing Arts. Each serves its own artistic mission and forms the core of classical performance in New York.

West 62nd Street

West 65th Street

I have appeared at multipleofficial Lincoln Center venues within the Lincoln Center campus

1. Vivian Beaumont Theater

This flagship drama and vocal theatre is anofficial Lincoln Center venue within the Lincoln Center campus, built for plays, vocal recitals and premium concerts. I have hosted and performed here.

2. The small theatre at Lincoln Center Library for the Performing Arts

Also anofficial Lincoln Center venue within the Lincoln Center campus. This intimate space hosts salon concerts and cultural forums. I have hosted and performed here.

【Insert photo：Prince John at the small theatre of Library for the Performing Arts】

Performing across these spaces has given me a clear understanding of venue boundaries and affiliations.

II. Four Landmark Official Lincoln Center Venues Within the Campus

These four landmarks are the authenticofficial Lincoln Center venues within the Lincoln Center campus, located right on Lincoln Center Plaza:

1. Metropolitan Opera House

The home of opera. With 3,788 seats, it is the most recognisable building amongofficial Lincoln Center venues within the Lincoln Center campus

2. David Geffen Hall (formerly Avery Fisher Hall)

3. David H. Koch Theater

4. Vivian Beaumont Theater

Lincoln Center’s main theatre for drama and vocal programmes, anofficial Lincoln Center venue within the Lincoln Center campus, where I have hosted and performed.

【Insert photo：Exterior of Vivian Beaumont Theater (wide panoramic shot)】

Caption: Exterior of Vivian Beaumont Theater at Lincoln Center

These four together make up the core official campus venues of Lincoln Center.

III. The Misunderstood Alice Tully Hall at Juilliard — NOT an official Lincoln Center venue within the Lincoln Center campus

Alice Tully Hall is often marketed as a “Lincoln Center venue”, but this is misleading.

➤ Alice Tully Hallis NOT located inside the Lincoln Center campus, nor is it a genuine Lincoln Center theatre.➤ Owned and operated by The Juilliard School➤ Located directly across Broadway from Lincoln Center Plaza

It sits inside the Juilliard School building, alongside Peter Jay Sharp Theater, another Juilliard-owned space. Both belong to Juilliard, a separate institution from Lincoln Center.

Artists choose Alice Tully Hall for its excellent acoustics, elegant interior, flexible scheduling and occasional Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society events hosted there. This association has led audiences to mistake it for anofficial Lincoln Center venue within the Lincoln Center campus

Alice Tully Hall is a superb recital hall, yet administratively and geographically, one street separates the official Lincoln Center campus venues from Juilliard’s independent venues.

Conclusion

The name Lincoln Center carries great prestige worldwide. Many people cannot tell which spaces areofficial Lincoln Center venues within the Lincoln Center campus. This is an easy-to-miss detail in New York’s arts scene.

Drawing this distinction is not to divide music, but to respect each venue’s identity. Music crosses borders, yetofficial Lincoln Center venues within the Lincoln Center campushave their own ownership and legacy.

May artists and listeners alike enjoy the music while understanding the true identity of each stage.
